Insects Survive Zero Weather Says Ohio Expert

Columbus march 11 in a talk Ohio State University extension specialist T H Parks notes insects endure zero temperatures when snow blankets them. He says winter cold matters little for most species, with activity months driving numbers. White grubs wireworms chinch bugs and Hessian fly ignore winter. heavy rains cut chinch bugs by two thirds. Hessian flies die in dry spells. Corn earworm and Mexican bean beetle may fail acclimation and suffer. plant lice survive as eggs. Cold weather did prevent winter plowing and helped cutworms and webworms.

MEMORY LANE: GLENN HUNTER’S HOLLYWOOD TRAIL

Glenn Hunter, now back from a Chicago run of Equaring the Circle, is childed with luck and a sunny, ingenuous expression. The screen favorite known from Merton of the Movies and Waterloo Bridge recalls early poverty, stage beginnings, and later roles from Clarence to The Petrified Forest plus a love of music and sun. Born in Mills in 1896, he is remembered for Weath of the Water Tower and Smilin Through and remains a buoyant, absent minded eccentric in public and private life.
