Health care gaps help explain black mortality differences
Middle aged black men die at nearly twice the rate of white men of the same age, due to lower incomes and poorer health care access, a Health Affairs study notes. Black infant mortality falls, while overall gains in longevity narrow the gap only slowly. Surgeon General David Satcher says eliminating the racial gap could save about 83,570 lives each year.

Black health gap persists despite some progress since 1960
A study shows mortality rates for black men and infants have improved but remain higher than whites. Death rates for black males under one year fell from 5 307 in 1960 to 3 688 in 2000 while whites dropped from 2 694 to 656. Infant death declines also differ by race with substantial social and economic factors cited.
