Saigon bars banished to outskirts by city order
Saigon officials order the removal of about 190 bars from central districts to the city’s far side of the Saigon River by June 30 to curb the capital’s tainted image amid U.S. troop drawdown. Bases like Tan Son Nhut escape the crackdown. Some residents and owners view the move as necessary, others lament the loss of a longtime city scene. Marine PFC David E. Bayne, son of Elyria residents, recently completed basic training and is bound for Marine Corps Schools in Lakehurst after 15 days at home.
