Illinois Iowa brace for flood of the century
Residents and businesses in the Rock River Basin prepare for a potential flood of the century with crests 4 or more feet above the 1973 peak. Forecasters warn of 8 to 10 feet above flood stage as snow melts, threatening Moline Davenport and nearby mobile home parks and downtown areas. The Army Corps orders 750 000 sandbags and seeks 500 000 more while work on emergency dikes and levees awaits approval.

Pilot of Coast Guard ship blamed for deadly 1978 collision
In a joint inquiry into the death of 11 Coast Guardsmen, Rear Adm Raymond Wood says the Cuyahoga pilot CWO Donald Robinson may have misjudged the Santa Cruz Jr follow and that better signaling by the Argentine freighter might have prevented the crash. The night was clear and calm as the Cuyahoga prepared to turn into the Potomac River on October 20, 1978, and Robinson declined to testify.
