Israel announced it surrendered Gaza control to United Nations authorities, with Col. Matityahu Peled confirming the transfer in a Jerusalem Radio proclamation. Egypt was rumored to demand direct control, complicating the region’s future governance.
A state wide alert was issued for a gunman who stole 90,000 in government bonds and 939 in cash from an insurance firm safe in Arma. W. E. Ailes, secretary of the Shelby County Farmers Mutual Insurance Assn., was forced to open the safe and hide in a restroom for 19 minutes.
