Wage Stabilization Chief Questioned Over Steel Wage Row

Senate Banking committee pressed Wage Stabilization Board chief Na than P. Feinsinger for details on steel wage demands and potential inflation. The CIO United Steelworkers seek about 18 1/2 cents an hour, while industry leaders demand a price rise before any hike is granted. The board is drafting settlement recommendations after steelworkers threatened to strike. Maybank signaled limited ability to provide exact figures.

County School Board Acts on Routine Matters

Lorain County Board of Education met last night at 420 W Third St with three members present. They received a Willow Creek allotment petition to transfer to Black River district and scheduled an adjourned meeting later this month to hear all transfer petitions. The board approved Arthur G Yarian to attend a March 28 29 special education conference at Ohio State University and granted a bus driver certificate to Ralph OConnor. They also dispensed with the annual county wide meeting this spring.

Vincent Man Lacerations After Brawl at Hunt Residence

Vincent Man sustained a deep scalp laceration and a cut above the left eye in a drinking brawl at the Robert Hunt residence. Deputy sheriffs report Leo Butcher forced entry, assaulted Mrs Hunt, and was struck by Hunt with a bottle capper as he confronted Hunt. An ambulance ferried Butcher to St Josephs Hospital Lorain.

Bates Finishes Marine Boot Training at Private First Class

Carl W Bates aged 20 completed boot camp and earned a sharpshooter medal with a 215 score. He entered the Marines December 18, 1951 after working as a railroad switchman and attending Camden High School. His wife Geneva Bates of 423 Earl Court was informed today.

Induction of 12 Elyria Registrants In War Service

Twelve Elyria area registrants have been inducted into the armed forces in the latest draft call announced by draft clerk Miss Catherine McKee. Pentagon Failed to List 100 Publicity Aides

Washington House subcommittee on military waste charges the Pentagon tried to cover up at least 100 publicity staffers. Chairman F Edward Hebert demands a supplemental roster including names duties and salaries of press officers and speech writers across the Defense Department. A Pentagon spokesman says some information staff were not listed and the request asks for a full roster by the subcommittee.

Reds Seek to Extend Korean Armistice Naval Ban

Chinese staff officer Pu Shan proposed removing Korea references from the armistice clause banning blockades to cover all Communist countries. UN and Communist delegates discussed repatriation but kept forced repatriation for prisoners. Pre-Entrance Test Set For Elyria Memorial Nursing School

More than 25 high school graduates have applied for the first pre entrance psychometrical exam for the Elyria Memorial Hospital MB Johnson School of Nursing Fall class. Miss Margaret Krapp, RN director of nursing, notes applications are still being received and that several full tuition scholarships are available for qualified students based on scholastic achievement and personality. The test will be held at 12 30 pm on March 15 at the hospital.

Elyria Kiwanis Club Observes 33rd Birthday

Kiwanians of Elyria celebrated the club 33rd birthday at a noon luncheon in the Elke Marine Room. Charter member Jim Armitage spoke on the club history. Longtime members received pins and certificates of service, with past presidents recognized and HOH Meister chairing the meeting.

Fire Destroys Home on Fox Furnace Row

A fire caused extensive damage at 20 Fox Furnace Row during the evening. Neighbors and two fire brigades fought the blaze for 30 minutes to protect Mrs. Lile Terry, the occupant. The fire started in a defective coal oil range in the kitchen and spread to the first and upper floors, with major losses to kitchen and living room furnishings. Second floor items damaged by heat smoke and water. No damage estimate yet.
