Rice Aims To Break Indoor Two Mile World Mark In Madison Square Garden

Notre Dame coach John Patrick Nicholson believes Greg Rice, 1939 Irish captain, can break Don Lash’s world indoor two mile record of 8:58.0. Rice will race Saturday in the Knights of Columbus games at Madison Square Garden, aiming for splits of 63, then 67 seconds per quarter, with a target 6:40 at the 1 1/2 mile mark and 2:13 to tie or better the record. Nicholson emphasizes pacing, expecting Rice to reach the mile post in 4:26 to 4:28 and the 1 1/2 mile mark around 6:43, with a goal to home in record time if he can hit 6:44 at the third half-mile.
