The piece recalls James Naismith’s 1891 instruction to create a new indoor team game for Springfield College, leading to basketball. It notes the use of peach baskets as goals, a 3 by 4 foot court, 13 original rules, and early constraints such as no running with the ball and no personal contact. It contrasts rugby’s roughness with the indoor need.
