Inspector’s failure to flag unlicensed peanut plant fuels outbreak split

A Texas agriculture inspector certified Peanut Corp. of America’s Plainview plant as licensed in 2005 2006 and 2008 even though it operated without a state health department license. After recalls and tests linked ground peanuts to Salmonella and deaths the plant was found with rodent droppings and bird feathers and ordered shut.
