Mice as Big Business in the Lab Trade
The mouse industry supplies research animals to major firms like The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor and Charles River Laboratories in Wilmington. Prices vary from nearly $200 for arthritic mice to about $100,000 for custom genetically modified specimens as researchers rely on mice to study Alzheimer’s, obesity, diabetes, cancer and other conditions. Rob Taft at Jackson maintains 2,680 strains, with embryos stored at ultra low temperatures, and researchers can order hundreds of diabetic or anemic mice for experiments.

The Rise of Laboratory Mice and Gene Machtonomy
Scientists describe how mouse genetics mirrored human DNA, the rise of sterile housing and strict health checks, and the shift to custom knockout and transgenic mice. Companies, labs, and the NIH expand mouse strains to map genes to diseases and develop new drugs.
