Lorain Ship Yard Backing Skyway Firm Draws Unite Hope

More than 150 union workers from the closed AmShip area pledged support to Charles Parker of Skyway Painting and Ship Repair Co. in a Lorain meeting at UAW Local 425. They backed nonunion work, flexibility in jobs, and wage parity with AmShip, aiming to revive ship repair and construction while negotiating a future umbrella union. Parker anticipated initial topside work beginning after transportation papers allow hiring 20 to 30 workers in April, with full yard activity possible in November if contracts proceed.
