School prayer amendment faces tight Senate vote
Washington AP reports supporters claim Senate backing for a constitutional school prayer amendment is high but uncertain. Senate leaders push debates led by Howard Baker as backers tally roughly 47 supporters, with 7 more if silent prayer is allowed, while 28 oppose and 18 undecided. House allies mount a round the clock lobbying effort ahead of the vote.

Gunman falls five floors in Tenderloin standoff
In San Francisco a 33 year old man with alleged emotional problems died after a five hour standoff with police in a Columbia Hotel Tenderloin room. He fired rounds from inside and climbed a fifth floor window before being shot and falling to a light well. Hotel maintenance man William Rogers, 35, was wounded but listed as in satisfactory condition. Police say a knock on the door likely saved him as the bullet struck his wrist. Residents say Hoard had complained of disturbances in recent days.
