Elyria records show 1,718 births at Elyria Memorial Hospital in 1971, with 1,056 resident births and 662 nonresident. The year’s deaths total 1,928 countywide, including 617 in Elyria and 790 in Lorain, while heart disease remains the leading cause in Lorain County.

United front forms to battle area oil spills in Cleveland Harbor

A nine member Cleveland Harbor Conservation Committee coalition pools boom skimmer and trained manpower to clean oil spills on the Cuyahoga River and Cleveland Harbor. Missing ITT witness delays Kleindienst vote

A Senate vote on attorney general nominee Richard G. Kleindienst was postponed indefinitely after a key ITT lobbyist, Mrs. Dita Beard, was found gravely ill in Denver. FBI sought her for questioning about an ITT merger memo linking a government settlement to a $400,000 ITT offer for GOP convention costs. Beard’s condition halted hearings and postponed testimony until clarity emerges.

Seven dead as church bus overturns in California

A Chico Neighborhood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church bus carrying 56 teens and counselors overturned on a rural road near Lincoln California. Three youths died and 19 were injured, four in serious condition, as survivors were rushed to Auburn and Sacramento hospitals. The driver Robert Rose said he eased the bus onto the dirt shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic before losing control. The trip aimed for Donner Ski Ranch at Donner Pass for a four day ski weekend.
