Seeded teams dominate sectional showdowns this week

High school basketball sectional action heats up with 23 area teams chasing a Columbus bid. Avon Lake sits outside the seed field as Admiral King, Lakewood, Lorain, Bay and others vie for district advancement through Baldwin Wallace and Elyria venues with multiple matchups, upsets, and title implications across Class AAA and AA.

Lutheran East Clinches Western Reserve Title Over Open Door

Lutheran East built an early lead and defeated host Open Door 69-45 in the Western Reserve Conference tournament final. East improved to 17-3, led 19-6 after one quarter, and 34-16 at halftime. Michael Simmons scored 16 for East while Open Door’s Mike Firestone had 20 and Bruce Adams 14. Open Door falls to 9-12 and advances to a Class A Sectional title date against Lutheran West.

Reisz leads area four in slow weekend bowling

Luann Reisz top-scored with a 594 series at Grafton Lanes in the four person event with games of 193 199 and 202. Marilyn Smola led the Kings and Queens with 581 and 225. Ruby Snyder and Paul Conrad added scores of 554 and 550 as Eileen Bridgett posted an area high 232.

Rocky River Gymnasts Place Third in State Meet

In Columbus Dublin High hosted the Ohio high school girls gymnastics state meet. Rocky River finished third among 43 teams with 200.25 points, while North Olmsted placed 18th and Brookside 20th. Gynne Schanz led Rocky River with second on uneven bars, third on balance beam, and fourth all-around. Christine Peters of Brookside was 15th on uneven bars and 22nd in all-around. Worthington won the team title with 208 points.

Westlake hosts tight district basketball semifinals

Westlake’s top seeds push toward district titles as Class AAA semifinals unfold Wednesday. Lakewood meets Westlake at 6 30 p.m. with Demons chasing a third straight title under Bill Shollenberger. Admiral King battles North Olmsted at 8 15 p.m. Winners head to Friday’s Westlake district final for a shot at Parma Regional glory.

Local bowler Mike Zimmerman nails first 300 at Grafton Lanes

Mike Zimmerman rolled his first perfect 300 in Moose No. 778 league competition at Grafton Lanes, part of Elyria Bowling Association scoring that included a 277 game and a 790 series. The feat comes as area bowlers Dennis Ingold and Chuck Miller had posted prior 300s this season. lane conditions will be reviewed by an American Bowling Association official before any official approval.

246 game lifts Hayes to top area bowler title

Nancy Hayes led area bowlers Friday night with a 691 series after a 246 in the opening game. Diane Long added 583 with 169 226 188, while Karen Keeper had 581 in the Friday Mixed Classic. Cindy Lucas cracked 600 with 231 191 178 for a 600 and joined the 600 CLUB.

St Paul wins Class A wrestling district title

St Paul, Firelands Conference champion, captured the Class A district title with 239 points, edging Sandusky St Marys. New London finished seventh, Western Reserve tenth, Monroeville thirteenth in a 14 team field. St Paul qualified 12 wrestlers for the Bellevue regional led by Mike Herner and Mike Smith as champions, with multiple runners up and placers across weight classes.

St Anthony edges St Marys to claim CYO A title

St Anthony of Elyria Lorain kept its unbeaten CYO basketball run alive by defeating Elyria St. Marys 44 to 39 to win the St Marys Invitational Tournament A division championship. Scott Soltis scored 14 for St Marys as they rallied from a 10 point halftime gap but a late turnover sealed the win for St Anthony. Mike Hartmani led the winners with 16 points while Joel Provenza added 10 and Larry Cohagan had 11 for St Marys which drops to 12-4.

All-Buckeye Basketball Honors Highlight Admiral King

The Buckeye Conference releases its All Buckeye team led by Admiral King with Altheda Suggs Cheryl Bansek and Melanie Collins on the first team. Sue Gahn of Fremont and Monica Pearson of Sandusky also earn first team honors. Second team includes Ann Gilbert Elyria and Barb Seymore Lorain with other notable selections. Coach of the Year is Bill Lobb of Findlay.

Open Door Girls Fall In Title Game

Elyria Open Door girls lost 25 to 31 to Baptist Christian in the Reserve Conference tournament final. The game was tied at 23 late, then Baptist Christian pulled away in the final frame. Open Door’s top scorer finished with 2 points, while Samantha Stowski added 11. Open Door ends the season 8-8, Baptist Christian improves to 18-1.

Schnieder fires third highest men's series at Elyria Bowling Center

Gary Schnieder opened with 258 and 237 before a 264 to post a 759 series in the B C Friday Nite 900. It marked his first 700 plus game of the season and the third highest area total behind Bud Denker's 783 and Joe Sadowski's 782. Dick Moran led 606 Club action with a 651 on a 253 game, Ray Walker had 650, Tom Brassee led with 680 in Friday Mixed Classic, and John Photimos led another Friday Nite event with 637 as prize money for top finishers is listed.
