Lucas era of Star Wars ends as ILM stays busy
In spring 1983 George Lucas plans a sabbatical after completing the Star Wars trilogy while Industrial Light and Magic continues heavy effects work on Return of the Jedi. ILM, housed near San Francisco, handles effects for Enemy Mine Explorers and other projects as Paramount balks at Munich for Exploers. The drama shifts to Carmen star Julia Migenes Johnson whose soundtrack gains praise and a Gershwin album, while Godard’s Hail Mary stirs controversy in France and the upcoming Santa Claus merchandising blitz looms for Labor Day releases.
