Textile worker Marion Pitchford of Charlotte, 56, amputated his left arm below the elbow with a pocket knife after it was caught in a machine. He felt great pain but wanted to escape, considered driving himself to the hospital, then rode with a coworker who stopped after a block. A cab ride failed due to distance and a flat tire before a policeman transported him to the hospital. Pitchford, called a tough old bird, plans to return to work after recovery.
