The Ohio Senate approves new limits on unions as Manning defies party lines with key votes. Debate centers on how restrictions impact collective bargaining and political dynamics within the legislature.
A 17 16 Senate vote sent a GOP backed measure to the Ohio House that would restrict collective bargaining for about 350 000 public employees including teachers and police. The bill bans strikes and removes automatic raises while limiting wage talks to merit based increases. Binding arbitration would be eliminated and final contract decisions rest with elected officials. State Senate President Tom Niehaus called it a fair bill.
Union leaders express shock yet readiness to fight as Ohio Senate clears SB 5 restricting collective bargaining for teachers police and public employees by a 17 to 16 vote. Gov Kasich supports the measure and the bill moves to the GOP controlled House. Lorain Education Association president Dave Woods calls it a bad bill ending decades of negotiations.
