A federal study shows bankers, real estate developers and insurers make up 31 percent of the wealthiest families while only 2 percent of families are headed by someone in banking, real estate or insurance. Lawyers and accountants, doctors and health professionals account for smaller shares of the top tier.
A 1983 survey of 4,103 U S families shows the highest income groups concentrate in banking, real estate and insurance. Only 1 percent earn more than 150,000 annually while 9.5 percent reach 280,000 or more, with professionals in these fields comprising large shares of top brackets.
