80 Day No Strike Order Granted By Federal Judge
Washington the government won an 80 day Taft Hartley injunction against John L Lewis and his coal miners as President Truman pressed for a quick report on concessions and remaining disputes. Judge Keech granted the 80 day order to replace the temporary one in effect since February 11, with 20 days already elapsed and 60 more days during which a strike is barred. The White House said Truman asked for a rapid board of inquiry report from coal operators and union leaders. Administrations sources indicated seizure powers might be sought if no settlement emerges. The ruling also held that the union was not found in contempt for defying the prior order, complicating the government’s enforcement strategy.
