Ohio sees duck counts rise amid warm winter survey
Ohio Division of Wildlife reports a 42 percent jump in waterfowl counts from last year amid unseasonably warm January surveying. Goose numbers fell in December as temps cooled, while bluebills remain rare and various duck species show mixed totals. Local marshes around Lake Erie are in excellent condition, with new federal Wetlands Conservation Act funding planned to support the Lake Erie marshes project and related restorations across several state wildlife areas.

Disease on Chinook Salmon Sparks Worry in Lake Michigan
Indiana and Illinois biologists report a rising number of ailing Chinook salmon in Lake Michigan. At Burns Harbor Indiana observers saw 2 to 15 pound fish lethargic in the top water, with officials urging live samples and ice for testing as a regional sickness and die‑off trend deepen. The Great Lakes Fisheries Commission forms a multistate panel to probe the illness while PCB contamination appears lower in recent years.
