Gates to withdraw name from CIA bid reports say
The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, reports Robert M. Gates plans to withdraw his nomination to head the CIA this week after Republican leaders warned Senate rejection. Navy says Augusta collision with Soviet subs caused major damage
Navy sources say the attack submarine Augusta likely collided with a Soviet submarine in the northern Atlantic last October. Damage rose to 2.7 million dollars after initial estimates of 1.5 million. The collision also involved nearby Soviet subs and the incident remains under classified internal investigation. The Augusta returned to Groton for repairs and is back in service.
