Dig-out to prove costly for cities
As residents finished digging out from a major snowstorm area officials began tapping city coffers for cleanup costs. Elyria mayor Keys said the city's bill would run to thousands of dollars with overtime and cross-department help. State and county officials hope for disaster designation and federal aid, though officials doubt it will cover the full amount. The city budget faces strain as maintenance garages stay open and funds are redirected. National Guardsmen costs exceed $100,000, while county workers will be paid or compensated. Some industries report lost production but shovel sales rise.
