Taxation debates dominate county Farm Bureau councils

Several councils push tax reform aimed at nonessential items such as horse racing and cigarettes while opposing a state income tax. Proposals include eliminating tax stamps, raising sales tax to four percent, and exempting drugs from sales tax, with calls for a state tax commission to study the system. Some councils urge economy rather than rate hikes and favor targeted taxes on liquor, cigarettes, and horse racing wagers. Others oppose sales tax on farm grain, seed, feed, and higher gasoline taxes, and support retail tax on horse racing and liquor.
