Unwed teen mother wins first round in Ohio custody case
Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge Henry T. Webber ordered the 17 month old girl returned to her mother, a 15 year old who gave birth in September 1973. The habeas corpus suit by Lorain County Legal Aid Society seeks to overturn the child’s placement with adoptive parents since December 1973. The ruling, cited as a good faith yet hasteful agency action, may shape Ohio adoption procedures and faces appeal to the Ninth District Court of Appeals. The natural father, whose whereabouts were unclear, is said to be in Okinawa with the Marine Corps, potentially prompting a second suit.
