Farmers to Get Information On Soil Conservation

The 1927 soil conservation program will be explained to Lorain County farmers in the second half of March. A meeting produced 65 community committeemen trained to implement the program, with reports on soil bases for about 4,000 farms to follow. Breyley urged farmer cooperation to reduce costs and boost payments, noting federal funding covered much of 1936 costs. About 500 more 1936 payment applications were sent to Columbus, with expected checks over $25,000 total to farmers and notices to call at the local office.

Three Economists Clash Over Federal Crop Control

The Brookings Institute economist Edwin G. Nourse and Stanford’s Joseph B. Davis, with Harvard’s John D. Black, debated the practicality of federal crop control devices. Davis cited AAA production controls as weak, Black urged enforcement against atypical maladjustments, while all agreed such tools work only in emergencies, not as a continuous economic plan. Also, a Bingo Party in memory of Mrs. Bertha Lyberger was postponed due to her death.
