Black River Schools weighing levy amid budget cuts and new leader
Black River Board of Education discussed potential levy funding as the district completes reductions. Superintendent Chris Clark warned of scenarios like auditor adjustments that could worsen finances, while new superintendent Anthony Stretar was approved to start August 1. British man sentenced for role in wine scam
A British man Casey Alexander of London has been sentenced to three years probation for conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a wine and whiskey investment scam that defrauded at least 150 Americans of more than 13 million dollars. He was ordered to pay over 202 thousand in restitution after pleading guilty to soliciting elderly investors via cold calls. The FBI investigated the case with victims nationwide and noted attempts to keep funds in European bonded warehouses until profits were claimed. A 2020 report from Highland Heights police documented a victim losing 300 thousand over 18 months. Elder Abuse Awareness Month runs in June and authorities urge reporting suspected scams to the National Elder Fraud Hotline or IC3.
