A Lorain County article warns the July 4 weekend could see up to 35 deaths in Ohio and as many as 1 000 nationwide. It urges slower driving, rest when fatigued, and strict adherence to traffic laws as law enforcement doubles efforts with extra patrols and graduates on duty to curb fatalities.
An airliner carrying 80 aboard including Americans plunged into Kowloon Bay while landing in heavy rain. Rescue teams pulled 62 from wreckage. six were pronounced dead on arrival, 35 hospitalized, 21 treated and discharged. 18 were reported missing as search continued.
The UN General Assembly faces a clash over whether any demand for Israeli troop withdrawal from Egypt Jordan and Syria hinges on Arab states declaring peace. Egypt Jordan Syria and Lebanon remain technically at war despite 1949 armistice deals. Twelve boys aged eight and nine plus three counselors found themselves stranded on a river island at Camp Iss-See-Kes as the current surged to four feet. George Shriver called aid from the Ohio State Patrol, Lorain County deputies, park rangers, and finally the U S Coast Guard which supplied a 16 foot boat and rescued the group. Camp director Nelson Campbell and staff helped keep the campers calm as they waited for help.

News accounts cite officers as offensive and crowds dispersing repeatedly. Nearby Niagara Falls saw arrests and a struck officer as unrest spread.

Lorain officials expect about 70 000 attendees at a week long International Festival at Sheffield Shopping Center. Richard Olson president of the International Association of Lorain says the first city wide effort to promote Lorain as international has surpassed expectations. The lineup includes a Monday pageant and dance Tuesday parade Wednesday band concert Thursday music Friday Governor Rhodes opening ceremonies with events to follow through the weekend.
