Youngstown Struggles With Steel Slump And Slow Recovery
In Youngstown Ohio the Mahoning Valley bears the brunt of a steel industry downturn. The Bureau of Unemployment Compensation reports 9000 new and continued claims last week as mills run at about 40 percent capacity. Factors include distant customers high transport costs and high labor costs deterring new industries from locating here. Industry observers note pipe makers struggle in a weak market while union and business leaders debate how to attract new employers.
