Smoltz Plays U S Senior Open First Round Lacking Fire

Hall of Famer John Smoltz, playing as a guest, posted 15 over 85 on a wind soaked Broadmoor course in Colorado Springs. He struggled with high rough and tough lies, noting he does not have the game for the setup yet. Rocco Mediate led a cluster at 2 under while Deane Pappas and Kevin Sutherland trailed. Lee Janzen and Kenny Perry offered solid showings as the course drew sharp criticism from the USGA for its Shinnecock-like design. Smoltz hired a local guide Colin Prater to gain local knowledge, but remained out of his element and said there is a long way to go to contend.
