North Ridgeville faces a disappointing turnout for a Sunday sports festival meant to boost school athletics funding. Despite a star lineup and heavy advertising, only about a hundred attendees showed, leaving athletic director Dave Dudik questioning donor potential and the event’s impact on junior high programs.
School Superintendent Jack Moore frames the plan as education first as North Ridgeville school officials consider restoring April cuts if a 10 mill levy succeeds in a August 3 special election. Restorations include buses, aides, afterschool programs and textbooks while a failed levy prompts deeper cuts in transportation and staffing.
Two people remain hospitalized after a Sunday two car crash at West Erie Avenue and Fifth Street in Lorain. Five others had brief injuries. Dean Allwine of Galion drove east and crossed centerline into oncoming car driven by Carl Nielsen. Allwine, 62, was charged with driving left of center after telling police he blacked out. Nielsen’s passenger Eugene Hurst, 66, suffered a broken back and was in serious condition at St. Joseph Hospital. Allwine and Nielsen were treated and released from Lorain Community Hospital. Nielsen’s passengers Rebecca Shaw 56, Krystina Hogg 27, and her 10-month-old son Francis were also released. Krystina Hogg’s other son Arne, 2, was in fair condition with a fractured leg.
