Study on social drinking ends in failure for alcoholics
A decade long UPI report concludes a program to turn 20 alcoholics into social drinkers failed. Four died from liquor related causes and only one remained a so called controlled drinker. Dr Mary Pendary of UCSD and VA Medical Center urged abstinence as the only rehab and called for safeguards and a rewrite of the study. The work had previously shifted views toward controlled drinking as an alternative to abstinence.
