World famine predicted by Dr. Borgstrom warns of 1984 crisis
Dr. Georg Borgstrom of Michigan State University warns of a looming global famine as population grows by a billion per decade. He calls for drastic shifts to new foods and even marine livestock while trashing optimism about feeding billions. He cites sea creatures and insects as future staples, urges sewage plants to become food sources, and says birth control alone cannot avert hunger before the mid eighties.

Boulez Named New York Philharmonic Music Director
The New York Philharmonic selects Pierre Boulez as music director succeeding Leonard Bernstein in 1971, a move seen as a major development for U.S. orchestras. Boulez, 44, brings a wide range of interests, blends composer conductor roles, and may broaden the orchestra’s adventurous projects while remaining compatible with Bernstein's legacy. The choice follows Szell’s era and signals strong support for contemporary work and new audiences.
