Aphid Threat to Maple Trees in Elyria Area

Aphids sap maple trees, shrubs, and plants in Elyria and nearby towns, leaving them sickly and vulnerable to disease. Control centers on nicotine sulphate sprays directly on the aphids, with other crop pests noted, including army worms in Lorain County now under control thanks to natural parasites and recent spraying.

Rochester Plans Fourth of July Homecoming Parade

Rochester prepares an Ohio Sesquicentennial themed celebration on July 4 featuring a prairie schooner drawn by 3400 pound oxen owned by Kermit Long of Carrolltown. The day includes parade contests games a picnic dinner and a formal program with fireworks at night.

June Tomasch Virginia Erb and Karen Eaken demonstrated at the Chatham Cheerful Chirper 4-H club meeting held June 24 at the schoolhouse after a baseball game. Paint for mailbox posts was purchased and painting to start at the township southwest corner.

Former Elyria Man Promoted to Air Mail Traffic Chief

Harold Otto, a 20 year veteran of American Airlines, was named supervisor of Air Mail Express Traffic in the Chicago area by District Sales Manager Bonham M. Fox. Otto, formerly a Cleveland sales representative, takes over from Eric Thon who becomes cargo sales representative for Chicago North Side. The Otto family once lived on Eastern Heights Boulevard in Elyria and plans to move to Chicago next week. son Eugene M. Otto remains in Elyria.

Oberlin student conducts services and church notices

Vincent James Biddle a student at the Oberlin College School of Theology conducted services at the Methodist Church Sunday. Official church board meeting is set for Thursday evening July 9 in the church parlors. W S C S meets Thursday July 16 at the Goodsite home for a 6 p.m tureen supper. Shirley Strickland, leaving in July to join the Women’s Marine Corps, was honored at a party hosted by her parents with relatives from Elyria Lorain and Vincent. games and refreshments followed.
