Spiegel Grove Navy ship opened as artificial reef off Key Largo
After eight years of planning and a minor oil leak, the 510 foot Spiegel Grove was scuttled off the Florida Keys as an artificial reef. Divers began visiting the site about six miles off Key Largo, where coral is already forming on the hull. The $1.35 million project, funded by the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce, the county tourist council, donations, and dive medallion sales, aims to attract more than 50,000 divers annually.
