May brings first foreign trade surplus of year
Washington AP The Commerce Department reports May exports ahead of imports by 395.6 million, marking the first surplus this year after a April deficit of 202.1 million. Year to date, the deficit stands at 970.8 million while last year showed a 3.4 billion surplus. A 24 percent drop in oil imports to 165.1 million barrels, the lowest in ten months, largely drove the May surplus, though officials said the drop may be temporary and oil imports are nearing record levels again.
