Unser Wins Schaefer 500 at Pocono Despite Back-to-Back Drought
Al Unser overcame early setbacks at Pocono to lead 75 of 80 final laps and win the Schaefer 500 by 3.2 seconds over Mike Mosley. Debris damage, a blown tire, and an oil system hiccup barely slowed him as 17 cars held the lead at some point. Janet Guthrie, racing as the first woman in a USAC 500, finished 24th after gear box trouble.
