Bourma Farms Milks Soil Riches for Second Harvest Support
The Buurma and Bourma family farms near Willard grow 30 crops on more than 5,000 acres with four major operations in Michigan and Georgia. They employ about 400 seasonal workers most of whom are migrant families with an on site clinic and long ties to Second Harvest through Ohio Food Program. The soil, known as muck, is highly fertile but eroding with a projected 50 to 60 year lifespan, a challenge for future vegetable production.
