The two youths Roy Berard Torkington and John Lyon Paul said they were threatened during a Friday all-night meeting in Itta Bena and warned they would not leave town if they spoke at a Negro mass rally.
Twelve youths from the North End were arrested Friday night by police before a planned confrontation with an East Boston gang. They faced charges of unlawful assembly and were released to guardians for a court appearance today.
Reinforced police squads patrolled Chicago's north and northwest sides after attacks and looting by youths described as Negro teenagers released for summer vacation. The crowd attacked white people, fought with police, and looted a store. At least 10 people were injured, including 16 policemen, one seriously. Eighteen youths were arrested.
In Bushkill Pennsylvania a pre-dawn explosion ripped through a disabled tractor-trailer loaded with explosives. Six people were killed and ten seriously injured. Petitions bearing 455 signatures urging a referendum on a 20 percent sewer rate increase were turned over to City Auditor Wallace Smith.
