London reports that President Eisenhower may rethink an immediate ban on nuclear tests. The London disarmament conference heatedly debated the wisdom of a swift halt as diplomats weighed strategic and security concerns influencing future policy.
In Tokyo the UN atmosphere heated as Premier Chou En Lai was dismissed by UN figures as repeating the usual communist lines. Thailand’s Prince Wan Waithayakon downplayed any imminent Asia war, noting Red China seeks UN entry rather than war.
Joseph A. Richardson, native of Illinois, appointed plant manager for Ford's new Brownhelm Township assembly plant. He will establish an executive staff in Dearborn and move to temporary headquarters near Lorain this year. The $1.5 million facility, under construction 16 months, opens in summer 1958 with about 2 500 workers and two shift capacity for 960 vehicles daily. Richardson has worked at Ford since 1948, most recently as acting plant manager at Kansas City.
President Eisenhower signaled support for bills limiting FBI file use in criminal cases following the Jencks decision. Senate Leader Knowland said lawmakers aim to curb the ruling’s loopholes while the FBI warns it may drop prosecutions to protect confidential sources.

Butler county railroad crossing near Hamilton Trenton Road to receive automatic flasher lights within three months by order of the State Public Utility Commission. Six people died in a June 28 1956 train truck collision at the crossing and two more perished January 16 1952 in another crash.
Five entombed miners trapped in a rural West of Pittsburgh district near Steuben were rescued by a giant auger mining machine. The crew surfaced at 10:50 p.m. EDT after the shaft feeding air collapsed, but the continuous boring rig freed them from a deep chamber. Kenneth Hamilton and four others emerged uninjured to cheers from families and rescuers.
In Columbus the State Health Department lab confirms a Cleveland airman has Asiatic Flu or Asian flu the first such case in Ohio. Health Director Ralph Dwork said the airman who returned earlier this month from duty in Ja Paris is recovering. Officials say no indications the virus has spread locally and public health officers are watching closely. Grace of Monaco is pregnant with her first child due late fall and authorities cite France Presse reporting.
