Avon Safe-Breaking Plot Nets One Arrest

Avon officials and Sheriff arrested Frank Stewart on burglary tools charges after a gunfight at Avon town hall. Authorities say Stewart heads a Lorain gang planning a multi-site safeblow at Avon including the city hall and local stores, with losses estimated in the thousands. Stewart denies the charges as extradition and bond arrangements proceed.

Former Canton Officer Indicted on Seven Bribery Counts

Ed E Curtis, former director of public safety in Canton, was indicted on seven counts of bribery by the Stark county grand jury. The panel, convened to review Curtis and his brother C Curtis, ousted mayor, delivered its verdict in Judge Ayler's courtroom. The indictment stems from charges filed with Gov. Donahey and testimony from a gubernatorial hearing.

Miracle escape as Elyria youths survive crash on North Ridge road

An Oldsmobile coupe carrying Elyria youths skidded into a ditch on North Ridge road near the South Lorain steel plant. Arthur Rising suffered severe facial lacerations needing forty stitches and possible brain concussion. Owner C H Rowland and Bernard Murray were hospitalized with injuries. A separate Ridgeville crash early today left four people cut and bruised. names unavailable. Sheriff Underhill investigated both incidents.

Ridgeville Church Tops Seminary Drive Milestone

St Peter's Catholic Church north of Ridgeville becomes the first Lorain County church to exceed its share in the 3 million seminary drive. The parish quota was 7200, workers led by H F Loescher reported progress to 3400, now raised to 10000 with team members including Adolph Frank John Wearsch Henry Stevin A R Pitts and others under Rev N Rhein.

Prowler Reported Busy on East Videonet Night

Prowler activity reported on the east videonet night with several calls to police. One report came from Swagen and another from East. The intruder escaped.

Light fines for law violators in local incident

L W Jenkins and son Leon were arrested for disorderly conduct after a late evening auto stop. The son faced a possible driving while intoxicated charge, but both received light fines $10 for the son and $5 for the father. J P Belskey and Louis Kocsany were given minimal fines for reckless driving and intoxication. Mayor Harry Hinkson appeared lenient. A separate injunction suit seeks to bar county treasurer Walter Ludwig from selling property to cover a $1,200 liquor tax. Mary Helli claims she was not involved and asks the tax to be canceled and her deed clarified.

Memorial Hall Organization Considers Town Bond Issue

The General Memorial Hall committee of Elyria meets in the Legion hall to decide whether to pursue a Township Bond issue for a Memorial Hall or obtain a Veterans Home. An executive seven member panel will study financing sites and report back July 17 for final action.

Playing With Matches Causes Small Home Fire

Children playing with matches resulted in a small fire at 208 East Bridge Street. The blaze started in a clothes closet at 9:30 this morning, setting one dress ablaze and burning it completely while the fire department responded promptly.
