Walleye boom turns western Lake Erie into fishing paradise
Port Clinton and nearby shores buzz with a walleye boom as charter boats fill, hotels stay full, and anglers from Canada and the U S. flock west of Huron. Officials credit the 1970 walleye ban and the 1968 gill-net ban for the rebound, while sport and commercial interests clash over nets and pollution.

Skipper and lad recall Lake Erie wreck during Excitement Day
A boat sponsored by the Lake Erie Sport Fishermen exploded and burned while Governor's party watched. All aboard were rescued with minor injuries. Passengers included Carl Mattix of Marion, Dick Kennedy of Marion, Ben Doepel of Akron, John Montgomery of Cincinnati Enquirer, and "Chip" Hart. Mattix helped in the crisis as the governor’s boat stood by. Despite the disaster, the crew later reported a successful walleyes haul and a booming western Lake Erie fishery with heavy traffic at Toussaint Tavern and Flora's Marina. The piece notes outside interest and two new walleye lures, crediting Rick Hallauer and Dan Kalo.
