Elyria plans renovate North Park with a covered ice rink and a new locker room bathhouse for a new swimming pool at a cost of 1.2 million dollars. The ice rink will be enclosed on three sides to shield it from winter weather and should be ready by December.
The Senate passes a sweeping tax reform bill by a 97 to 3 margin replacing 15 brackets with 15 and 27 percent rates, trimming deductions, and promising a conference with the House to reach a final measure. Reagan endorses the Senate approach as negoti ations begin for a final version.
Joint Committee on Taxation estimates show how 1988 individual tax reductions would be distributed among four income groups. Using IRS 1984 return data, about half of the tax cut would fall to higher income classes, with smaller shares for lower earners.
A Lorain boat crash survivor says the drowning victim Lenette Wyvill did not enter the water until the craft was on its way back to shore. Witness Bill Bigrigg describes a 20 to 30 minute delay freeing the boat from a breakwall before the vessel began to sink.
Elyria parents along East Avenue petition the school board to allow their children from 16th Street to Nelson Court to attend Midview Schools. They cite unsafe sidewalks and high speeds with multiple student injuries as reasons to provide bus transportation.
Lorain County Community College may raise tuition by $1 per credit hour. The board of trustees will review the proposal at a 4 p.m. meeting in the College Center. Administrators say the increase is needed to balance the budget and keep charges in line with costs. Lorain students currently pay $23 per hour, out-of-county $32, and out-of-state $70.
