Official shows guts by disqualifying Taguchi at Santa Clara meet
Ed Olson the longtime Santa Clara official disqualified Japanese swimmer Nobutaka Taguchi for an illegal dolphin kick in the 100-meter breaststroke. Meet officials initially upheld then reversed the call after coach Tokuda appealed, naming John Hencken the winner with Taguchi second. Olson condemned the ruling, asserting the kick was illegal despite later reversals and Munich contrasts. Taguchi defended his style, while Harshbarger set an American mark in the women’s 1,500 meters and Ender dominated with a triple win.
