Finch wins fight to have Knowles named HEW official
President Nixon ally Robert H. Finch appears to have won approval to nominate Dr. John H. Knowles as assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs in HEW. The move risks a Senate clash with Dirksen and a liberal GOP coalition over Knowles, director of Massachusetts General Hospital, who previously faced AMA opposition for advocating universal health care. If Dirksen blocks, a broader fight over presidential nominations could follow.
