Canada Tamps Down Spending to Protect Dollar

Canada unveiled a five point austerity program under Prime Minister John Diefenbaker to curb the international payments deficit and bolster the dollar. The plan raises tariffs on half of imports, boosts the bank rate, and expects foreign funding to cut the government deficit by as much as 450 million dollars. The tariff surcharges target nonessential goods with 5 10 and 15 percent rates while essential items and industrial components are spared. The move signals a shift to tight money and higher prices for consumers as Canada seeks to attract capital and stabilize the currency.
