James C. Watson, 24, of Ashland, employed by Collier Construction, died when a 45-foot pole toppled while he was atop it on a state highway project eight miles south of Norwalk. Excavation and rain may have loosened the base. Watson died after landing on the pole with a belt still fastened. Coroner delaying ruling pending morgue report. Watson left a wife and several children.

Fire Chief Alfred G. Nickley labels the cause of an estimated 1.5 million dollar blaze at the National Tube Division as an overheated unattended electric hot plate. The blaze confined to the roll shop left only the brick shell of a two story 400 by 52 foot building. Payroll records and master files were stored off site and some records salvaged. A 750 thousand dollar worth of IBM equipment was destroyed. Walter Christman faced municipal court charges for misusing a truck and disposing rubbish at the city landfill.
