New York UPI reports Norman Norell unveils a fall and winter collection dominated by midi length skirts with occasional below knee hemlines. Day wear favors double midicoats over jersey dresses, while evening looks feature reduced pants and maxi or ankle lengths.

Parents upset by the loss of kindergarten in struggling Elyria schools organize the Parents for Kindergarten Committee. They vow to pressure the Elyria Board of Education to restore the program and plan a telephone campaign after levy failures. Mrs. Kenneth Waltz leads the effort, criticizing poor planning budgeting and public relations. The board has served without pay since January to save funds. The Chronicle Telegram notes the board president said staff should not take stipends. The group aims to force listening from the board and continues outreach as it pages to more details.
Stocks opened lower in moderate turnover as liquidity concerns from Pesa Central bankruptcy lingered despite FRB reassurance. The marketwide indicator fell 6.09 percent on 310 issues with 170 decliners, 61 gainers. FRB rate actions aimed to lure deposits.
The New London village council hired local resident Dave Nelson to wind the First Methodist Church tower clock three times weekly for 1.50 per winding. Retired engineer Charles Bryson, a councilman, will supervise maintenance as timepiece needs care after years of neglect.

The Elyria Board of Education blamed levy failure for resignations, noting 14 teachers left including Elyria High band director Jav R Ross. Eight retirements were approved, and only nine replacements have been hired.
