Ax Slayer Changes His Story Again
Mitchell, 45, of Cleveland, gave detectives a third account in the ax murder of John T. Rayfields, 32, of Ravenna. He now says he hacked Rayfields with a Boy Scout hand ax during a dispute over an $80 loan, claiming Rayfields planned to use the money to set up a cheat spot. Earlier statements cited a quarrel over Rayfields drinking and then over a $5,000 burglary split. Mitchell says Rayfields refused the loan repayment, so he killed him and left the ax in Rayfields car to carry out the plan.
