David Duval finishes tied for second at the U S Open behind Lucas Glover at Bethpage Black, posting four birdies late and a 71. Phil Mickelson and Ricky Barnes tie for second at 278 while Tiger Woods places sixth. Glover seals first major with 4 under 276. Duval’s resilience fuels a top 10 return.
Lucas Glover clinched the U S Open finishing 4 under par at 276 to edge Mickelson and Duval by one. He hit a clutch 8-iron to six feet at 16 and a pressure putt to seal the victory while Woods faded to sixth. Mickelson failed to convert late birdie chances leaving Bethpage with questions about his major prospects.
Phil Mickelson, tied for the lead after an eagle on the 13th, fell two strokes back after a bogey on the 15th and a failed up-and-down on the 17th at Bethpage. The crowd roared for him as he bowed out with a silver medal unlikely and Amy Mickelson awaiting cancer surgery results.
