Norman Gillmore, a retired engineering professor, fulfilled a personal promise by hiking 150 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain Georgia to Mount Katahdin Maine. He began in March with a friend from Washington State joining for about three weeks, averaging near a mile per hour and carrying 40 pounds of gear.

Devon Cattle Drive to California 1859 60 Gains Fame
Charles A. Ely of Elyria sent 24 Devon cattle to California arriving in 1860 after a grueling overland trek guided by Henry Williamson. The herd, including the famous Duke of Devon and Emigrant, faced deserts mountains and Texas fever, with only one death before reaching Oakland and San Francisco where they sold for 7467 dollars. Governor James Wainwright auctioned the prize lot on April 19 1860.
